Fire brick, also known as refractory brick, is a type of high temperature insulation that is used widely in industries which require extremely effective thermal insulation. Whereas some high temperature insulation is designed to keep workers in close proximity safe and protect equipment from damage due to high heat radiation, fire brick and the like are used to increase the thermal efficiency of the application to which they are applied.
Energy costs associated with operating furnaces being significant and the need to maintain constant temperature imperative, high temperature insulation is quintessential.
High temperature insulation like fire bricks can be installed on the internal or the external walls of the furnace. Both approaches have their relative benefits and demerits. High temperature insulation on the inside of the furnace will consume valuable internal volume of the furnace. It will also be harder to work with; consider replacing damaged or deteriorated high temperature insulation in a relatively confined space and the downtime that must be incurred. However, being in closer proximity to the heat source, it should provide a more stable temperature internally.
Conversely, high temperature insulation installed on the outside of the furnace is significantly easier to maintain. Any flaws can be caught far more readily and corrective action can be taken quickly too, with a lesser downtime penalty. Fire bricks on the outside will also mean that the usable volume of the furnace will not be compromised.
Another type of high temperature insulation is the insulating concrete form. Essentially, it is added to ordinary concrete or cement wall. Concrete form comes in the form of foam boards and insulation blocks. Added to poured concrete walls, this high temperature insulation is extremely effective.
